On Saturday evening 6th August Slaidburn Silver Band gave its biennial ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert on the bandstand in the Clitheroe Castle Park.
There was a varied programme from composers Sir Arthur Sullivan to Sam Smith’s ‘Writing on the Wall’. The band’s opening piece was their eponymous march ‘Slaidburn’, by William Rimmer. The first half of the concert was concluded with a selection from Abba.
The second half included some of the well-known and much loved ‘Last Night’ classics, including Sir Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Sir Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 1, Sir Charles Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem and Auld Lang Syne. The concert concluded with an encore of the band’s rendition of the pop classic ‘YMCA’.
The band was ably assisted by Anne-Marie Brewer who performed a variety of songs, which included a selection from the popular musical My Fair Lady and leading the communal singing.
The performance was attended by a large audience on a warm summer evening. Guests included the Mayor of the Ribble Valley, Joyce Holgate MBE and Clitheroe Town Mayor, Councillor Mark French who gave a short address including thanks to all contributors.
